About Pitt Meadows in British Columbia, Canada

Pitt Meadows, BC is a city in the Fraser Valley in central British Columbia, Canada. This city is considered to be a rural municipality in the province of British Columbia. Cities in the Fraser Valley enjoy a temperate climate that is ideal for farming and other agricultural pursuits. The economy here was traditionally based on agriculture but had been shifting from country to country for many years.

In 1997, Pitt Meadows had a population of 15,000 residents and is experiencing significant growth today with over 20,000 people. The area around the municipality has been under intense development pressure for decades, resulting in increasing concern about its long-term sustainability for this activity.
Pitt Meadows is not located in the traditional Okanagan wine region but has a fascinating wine-growing history all its own. The British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI) took note of the potential here and organised a section to begin this viticultural venture. Through one of its members, the North American Wine Society (NAWS) helped support this effort by helping to establish the first vineyards and experiment with planting several grape varieties. The BCWI section in Pitt Meadows is called the Fraser Valley Zone (the same as Coldstream, British Columbia) but was initially divided into two zones – one for growing grapes for juice or table wines only, the other for wine production. The provincial government eventually gave the wineries making wine from grapes grown in Pitt Meadows the Fraser Valley Zone.
The section of the municipality that is planted to wine grapes falls entirely within a new Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) created by the current provincial government on June 21, 2007.
